Exciting Feb./Mar. Events

Dear band and orchestra students and parents,

It is good to be back at it. I hope you are enjoying your day, here are a few updates.

1. All students who are planning on state solo and ensemble festival please be sure to register via this link today.

2. Everyone, please take your instruments home this weekend and work on Band and Orchestra Festival Music and also Solo and Ensemble Music for State.

3. We are looking forward to our MSBOA festival performances for symphonic band (Wed., Feb. 27) and orchestra (Thurs., Feb. 28) and to a clinic at Hope College for concert band (Wed., Mar. 6). These are great opportunities for us to get feedback from musical experts on how we are progressing toward our goal of musical fluency. See the schedules for these events linked here.

4. We are thrilled to look forward to a weekend of jazz on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23. On Friday enjoy our wonderful jazz tradition, Swingin' the Night Away! On Saturday afternoon HCHS jazz students will be treated to jazz clinics with internationally renowned jazz artist Rodney Whitaker and his ensemble and at 7:00 p.m. our jazz ensemble will open the concert for Rodney Whitaker and his ensemble in the HCHS auditorium! Holland Christian High School and the Holland High School music departments welcome internationally renowned bassist and Mack Avenue recording artist Rodney Whitaker to the HCHS stage for a concert and a day of clinics with HCHS and HHS students. Whitaker is a Michigan State University distinguished professor of jazz double bass and a lifetime member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

Don’t miss this must-see concert on Saturday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m. in the HCHS auditorium. The evening will feature both the HHS and HCHS jazz ensembles, as well as Rodney Whitaker and friends with vocalist Rockelle Fortin. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students. Purchase your tickets at this link.

5. We are looking forward to Band Extravaganza on Tuesday, March 26 with our concert at 7:00 p.m. Invite your friends and family all put this date on their calendar.

Polar Vortex Week!

Dear band and orchestra students and parents,

Wow, what a week, looking forward to seeing you next week.

1. School will be open today from 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for any people who would like to pick up their instruments for home practice, solo and ensemble preparation, and playing test completion. It will also be open on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

2. Additionally, if you are in need of assistance with solo preparation or can gather your ensemble together today, send me an email and I would be willing to help out.

3. Orchestra and Symphonic Band members, if you are able please complete your playing test before Monday.

4. Concert Band members will have their playing test due next week, Prelude and Fugue in B flat. If you are able to start working on this it would be great.
