Merry Christmas! Lesson Scholarships and a special MMC performance!

Hello band and orchestra students and parents,

Merry Christmas!
Great work in the concert! So proud of all the work the kids have put it!

1. We are so excited to offer a lesson scholarship for HCHS band and orchestra students. Have you thought about lessons, but the cost made you pause or decide not to do lessons? We want to help you thrive as a musician and taking lessons on your instrument is one of the best ways to do this. This is also a great way to prepare for solo and ensemble festival.
Please fill out this form if you are interested. Submit this form by Thursday, January 6.

2. The bands are so excited that their next performance is at De Vos Hall in Grand Rapids as a featured band for the Michigan Music Conference. I have 2 free tickets for each student to give to family members so that they can join us at this performance. If you are unable to use your tickets let us know so that we can give them to other fans of the HC bands who would like to attend.

Congratulations to the Holland Christian High School Symphonic Band, which was selected to perform at the annual Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids! This HCHS group is one of 7 bands and orchestras from across the state invited to perform at the 2022 conference. The group will play for music teachers and musicians from all over the state of Michigan on Friday, January 28, 2022 at 8:00 a.m. You are also invited to attend this exciting event. Tickets for the HCHS performance at DeVos Performance Hall will be available to the general public at the box office and also via this link: https:/michiganmusicconference.orgtickets

3. Please put these extra band rehearsals in your calendar to help us prepare for this special performance:
Monday, January 3 family flex
Friday, January 7 at 7:00 a.m.
Thursday, January 13 at 12:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. (lunch provided after exams)
Friday, January 21 at 7:00 a.m. and family flex (it is a Monday schedule on Friday)
Monday, January 24 family flex
Thursday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.
Friday, January 28 - depart HCHS at 6:15 a.m.

4. We are in need of a band parent to drive the van and trailer with equipment to DeVos Hall on January 28. Would you be willing to help out?

5. Monday, January 31 will be our solo and ensemble recital night at HCHS. Kids will be able to sign up for a time (between 6 and 8:30 p.m.) to perform their solo or ensemble for friends and family and to help prepare for the February 12 MSBOA Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Thank you!
Merry Christmas!
Mr. VB

Music is a special gift and livestream link!

Dear band and orchestra students and parents,

1. On the morning of a concert I am reminded of these words written by a friend a number of years ago. It is worth a minute of your time.

Music is a special gift.

It touches something inside all of us, even if we don’t consider ourselves “musical.” At Holland Christian Schools, we believe the reason for that connection is the image or picture of God that we bear as people. His characteristics and qualities are woven into the fabric of what it means for us to be human, and just as God is the Creator, we too are creators—of poetry, art, architecture, dance, and music. Therefore, when you see the joy on the faces of performers or you feel that depth of meaning stirring in your soul, it’s because in those very moments, we are living out exactly who we were made to be.

And that’s glorious.

This reasoning is why, as a Christian school, music is such an important part of what we offer in our education. Sure, we’re teaching about half notes and eighth notes, about treble clefs and bass clefs, about musical dynamics and proper breathing techniques—but from an even larger perspective, we’re teaching students what it means to be fully human. In his 2008 address to freshmen parents at the Boston Conservatory of Music, Karl Paulnack said, “Music is one of the ways we make sense of our lives, one of the ways in which we express feelings when we have no words, a way for us to understand things with our hearts when we can’t with our minds.”

That’s a lot of importance for a subject to carry. And through that lens, it’s easy to see why we want to teach, play, and enjoy music with excellence. Later in that same speech in Boston, Paulnack said, “If we were a medical school, and you were here as a med student practicing appendectomies, you’d take your work very seriously because you would imagine that some night at 2 AM, someone is going to waltz into your emergency room, and you’re going to have to save their life. Well, my friends, someday at 8 PM, someone is going to walk into your concert hall and bring you a mind that is confused, a heart that is overwhelmed, a soul that is weary. Whether they go out whole again will depend partly on how well you do your craft.”

So, with the same vigor we apply to any pursuit worth doing, we pursue music—that God-glorifying, humanity-revealing, life-saving artform that we’re sharing with you today. I pray that all of you are blessed by it and take this special gift with you and out into the world when you leave this place.

2. Tonight's concert will be live streamed. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/hclive

3. We are looking forward to tonight! Just a reminder that Hope's protocols for our concert will be masks backstage for musicians (when not eating) and masks for our audience. Masks are not required for on stage performers.

Thanks!
Mr. VB

Important Disney family tickets info and Christmas concert info

Dear HCHS band and orchestra students and parents,

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

1. The High School Music Department invites you to its annual band, orchestra and choir Christmas concert on Wednesday, December 15, in the Jack H. Miller Center for the Musical Arts, located on the campus of Hope College.  We will be offering two performance times for those who would like to attend: one at 5:30 p.m. and one at 7:30 p.m.  General admission is free; no reservation necessary. We look forward to sharing in the celebration of our Savior’s birth through our music!

2. The Florida Planning Committee wanted to let you know about an important change in ticket information for families headed to Disney World. Disney has changed how they handle the sale of park tickets at the student/performer rate, and they no longer offer the option of adding extra days to the student/performer tickets. We are only able to order extra tickets for family members if the days of the family tickets match exactly the days of the HCHS band/orchestra tickets. Families would need to purchase the same park hopper pass which we are purchasing for students and start each day at the same park as the students. Park hopper passes now only allow you to move to another park after 2:00 p.m.

We are in the parks March 31, April 1 and April 2 and the price per family member would be $305.
We are also going to need to place this ticket order much sooner than in years past so that we can guarantee kids have access to the parks. Please email Janet Jenosky by Monday, November 29 at noon if you would like to purchase tickets for these dates. jjenosky@charter.net
Families can also book tickets at regular Disney World rates on their own.

We would recommend that those hoping to extend their stay at Disney World book tickets sooner rather than later as there are caps on the number of people in the parks.

Thank you!

Your help needed, Christmas concert date, and payment reminders

Hello HCHS band and orchestra students and parents,

1. We need your help to reach our goal for Florida.
One of our Florida group fundraisers is to sell concessions at the HS musical. Would you help us in one of these two ways? Parents and students can help out.
Sign up to sell candy:

2. Our Christmas concert will be on Dec. 15 in the evening. We are finalizing location details. It appears that we will do 2 concerts to accommodate the large number of people that attend and the timing will be 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

3. This is a reminder that you uniform cleaning payment, rental payments, and your first Florida payment are past due. Good news, though, you can still turn them in. :)

Uniform and rental info is on the blog post from Oct. 9. Your commitment letter has due dates and $ amounts for the Florida trip. Here is a digital copy of the letter.  If you fundraised and are wondering about the amount you owe either talk to Mr. VB or send him an email for your amount. I have a paper copy with all of your totals each day at rehearsal.

4. Check out your pictures from picture day on one of these two locations. Here or on the HC Smug Mug page.

Thanks!

Retreat, band/orchestra pictures and uniform fee info

Hello band and orchestra students and parents,

Here are some new info items and a few reminders!

1. We are kicking off the sub sale, one of our optional individual fundraisers for the Florida trip. Paper copies of this flyer are at school for you to pick up and here is a digital version.

2. We are excited to invite students to our rescheduled retreat Saturday, Oct. 16 from 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and are thankful for generous donations that make this possible for your children at no cost. Come enjoy fun, fellowship, and good food!

The retreat will happen just east of Macatawa Legends.  There is not a house on the land, so just look for a tulip flag, someone directing traffic, and two tire tracks in the grass just east of the mailbox at 13811 New Holland Street, Holland, MI 49424. It is actually on the opposite side of the road of the house with that address, but the same side as the address's mailbox (south side of the road).

Kicking off a wonderful year!

Dear band and orchestra students and parents,

I hope you are doing well and looking forward to your long weekend. It has been great making music together this week!

Here is a lot of important information. My apologies for the length of this blog entry. Grab a cup of coffee, tea or whatever your favorite beverage is....here we go.  :)

Save a link to this blog as a resource for information on what is coming for the bands and orchestras this year.

1. All concert band and symphonic band members please plan to join together to play pep band music on September 17 for the football game. We will play before the game and at halftime. We will also have pregame pizza and pop for you. We will meet for pizza at 6:00 p.m.

2. Here are links to concert dates and other important event dates:
Our Christmas concert venue won't be able to confirm availability for a few weeks so we listed the two potential dates and will pass along info when it is confirmed.

3. Please save this link to the band and orchestra page and calendar on the HCS website. It contains the most up-to-date information about upcoming events. Subscribe to the calendar on this page and all of the dates will automatically appear in your google calendar. When you get to the page, scroll down to see the calendar.

4. Parents and students, please be sure that the dates from the calendar/schedules above are added to your family calendars. Please fill out the form linked below to verify that you have signed off on the dates and also use this form to communicate any calendar conflicts for this year. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Completion of this form is required.
This form is due by Monday, September 13:

5. This document is a description of the many opportunities for instrumental musicians at HCHS. It includes descriptions of pep band, marching band, symphonic orchestra, solo and ensemble festival, jazz band, pit orchestra and more. There are so many opportunities for our music students to encounter through the year. Take a minute to check them out.

6. Next week we begin early morning group rehearsals. If your child is in one of these groups they will know and you will also receive and email. They are voluntary groups. See the schedule for morning rehearsals below.

Monday: Jazz Band 7:15 a.m. this group will start at a later date
Tuesday: Jazz Orchestra - 7:10 a.m. Yes, starting right after Labor Day
Wednesday: Chamber Orchestra - 7:15 a.m.
Thursday: Jazz Orchestra - 7:10 a.m.
Friday: Symphonic Orchestra - 7:00 a.m.

7. I wanted to highlight information for our concert band, symphonic band, and orchestra to Florida with performances at Disney World. We are planning on departing Holland on Wednesday, March 30, and wrapping up our trip with a worship service on Sunday, April 5, and a return trip arriving back in Holland on Monday, April 4. Some families travel to Florida and have their children stay with them at the end of the trip rather than ride the charter bus back to Holland. We have lots more info to come, and the trip is not required, but you won't want to miss it. Here is a bare bones version of our trip itinerary. Parents, we want you to join us as a chaperon and/or as a Florida Trip Committee member. Send me an email if you are interested in helping out.

8. We just started our first Florida trip fundraiser, ask your child about it. This is optional and can help students offset their own cost of the trip. Purchases can be made through your student (via paper copy handed out in class) or online with this link. https://store.myfundraisingplace.com/ac68360e-3b6f-4b1f-b639-9dd68308dfad

Thank you!
