Fall fun, scholarship opportunities, and solo/ensemble festival sign up!

Dear band and orchestra students and parents,

I hope you enjoyed the beautiful fall weekend. Here are some important announcements and reminders.

1. You will have 2 options for fundraisers for students. These fundraisers are optional and the profit from the fundraisers will go toward each student's cost for the 2024 spring band/orchestra trip to Florida. I know it is a long way off, no commitments need to be made about 2024, but some people have appreciated the chance to get an early start. We have the Butter Braid pastry sale and a sub sale. Here are the forms for these two and a link to order Butterbraid online.

2. We talked about solo and ensemble festival in class last week. Here is more info at this link which you can also use to sign up. This is open to all HCHS band/orchestra students and it is a great way to grow as a musician. You may sign up for no more than 3 events or ensembles.

3. Here is the link to the HC Music Boosters Lesson Scholarship Form.  If you have never had individual lessons on your instrument, it is a great way to grow as a musician and get the subtle tips that make you improve more rapidly. Have you thought about lessons or have already taken lessons, but the cost made you pause or decide not to do lessons? We want to help you thrive as a musician and taking lessons on your instrument is one of the best ways to do this. This is also a great way to prepare for solo and ensemble festival. Please fill this out this week and turn it in by Friday if you are interested.

4. All band members will perform in the pep band on Friday. All band and orchestra students are invited to stop by the band/orchestra room for pizza at 6:00 p.m. The pep band will play pregame music at 6:30 p.m.

5. We are looking forward to our retreat on October 14 and 15. We are still missing a few permission slips and if you haven't already paid, be sure to bring in your $10 this week. More details coming on the retreat soon.

Thanks!
Mr. VB

Retreat info and forms and looking ahead!

Hello band and orchestra students and parents,

I hope you are doing well! Happy homecoming week!

1. Just a quick note that the band and orchestra retreat is on October 14 and 15. Here is the retreat info sheet. The cabin sign up is on the wall in the band/orchestra room. Please turn in the consent form and $10 in to the envelope hanging on Mr. VB's office door. A special thanks to donors for helping us keep this cost low so you can enjoy this fun together!

2. Parents, we are in need of chaperons for the retreat on October 14/15. Please reply to this email if you can help out.

3. On October 14 we will be taking pictures during class for band students and at 7:00 a.m. for orchestra (all strings, woodwind, brass, and percussion). Students are being fitted for their uniforms during class. Band and orchestra guys will need black dress shoes and black socks for their tuxedo and girls will need appropriate footwear for their long black dresses. The shoes/socks are not provided by HCHS.

4. I didn't send out the reminder on Friday, so I will extend the deadline to today. This is your last chance to fill out the honors symphonic band or honors orchestra form and also to fill out the schedule verification form. These were #3 and #6 in the last blog post.

5. We will be kicking off a Butterbraid pastry and sub sale on Friday, Sept. 30. It is an optional fundraiser for anyone who wants to start raising a little money for the 2024 Florida trip. Yes, we are starting some preliminary planning for HCHS bands and orchestras for a trip in end of March/early April of 2024 to perform in Florida. :)

6. We would love to have a couple volunteers to help with sub distribution Oct. 24 1:30 to 3:15 p.m. and with Butterbraid distribution on Oct. 27 1:30 to 3:15 p.m.

Thank you!
Scott

Welcome to a new year!

Dear HCHS band and orchestra students,

I hope you are enjoying these beautiful summer days. I can't wait to make music with you soon!

Just a couple quick notes:
1 We are shooting for October 14 (evening) and 15 (morning) at Camp Geneva for our band/orchestra retreat. Plug this into your calendars, it is a fun time hanging out and you won't want to miss it! We can be flexible so that we can include kids who have other activities going on those days.

2. 10th-12th grade students are eligible for this year to have participation in symphonic band or orchestra become a credit for honors symphonic band or honors orchestra. This would show up as an honors course on your transcript and be counted as an honors course for your grade point average. You would continue to be a member of the same class that you signed up for, but would have the opportunity to engage music more deeply and have it show up on your transcript. Many of you were already participating in the things that would make you eligible for honors distinction. Check out the information here on how to make this happen.
*For those who are wondering, there will be no summer work this summer for 10th-12th graders who would like to get honors credit for band or orchestra. I will give you more details when we are together in class.

3. It wouldn't hurt to get your instrument out in the next week to make sure the instrument still works and to get yourself back in shape for music making.

4. We are having a folder filling party on Thursday, Aug. 18 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. We would love to have you join us! There will be ice cream and a chance to get a sneak peak at what we are playing this year! Reply to this email if you can join us for all or part of the time.

5. Throughout the year I post important band and orchestra information for this school year at this location. http://vandenbergnotes.blogspot.com/ It would be a good idea to bookmark this page.
I will always send you an email when I update the blog with new information.

Thank you!
